Prayer Shawl Ministry

Our mission is to provide hope, comfort, and healing to those who most need a reminder of God's love for them through the work of our hands and the prayers of our hearts.

What is a Prayer Shawl?

It is a work of love and the Holy Spirit. Each time we gather to work on the shawls, we sart by praying the Rosary. We have lively conversations and companionship while we work with our hands creating something wonderful for for others.
Our ministry is open to everyone evn if you don't have the time to attend the meetings. Shawls can be created at home on your own time and at your own speed.

Sometimes we need a tangible reminder of the love and care that surround us in our St. Denis Parish Family. We have begun a new ministry to give just that. The Prayer Shawl Ministry offers a warm, soft, hand-knit or crocheted shawl to those that are sick in body or in spirit. Made by members and friends of the parish, the shawls are a way of surrounding the recipient with prayer and the love of the parish family.

In addition to the prayers that are said when the shawls are started and finished, all shawls are accompanied by a loving message and are blessed by Fr. Vincent, Pastor of St. Denis, before given away.

A basic crochet stitch or knitting stitch will be taught at the meetings to anyone who wants to learn!

Meeting Times

We meet on the second and fourth Thursday of every month from 7:00PM to 8:30 PM, in the Rectory Meeting Room of St. Denis Church.

update

As you may be aware, the Hudson River Psychiatric Center is scheduled to close. The move to a new residence can be very traumatic for the patients involved. The St. Denis Prayer Shawl Ministry has been asked if we could provide 120 prayer shawls or lap blankets by October to help provide feelings of comfort and support for the residents. We are asking anyone who can provide help to make a shawl approximately 20 inches wide and 5 feet long, or a lap blanket approximately 4 feet square. Please call Josephine Sardo (845) 592-0299, or (845) 489-5040, or Suzanne Howard, (845) 221-5137 if you have any questions. Blankets and shawls can also be dropped off. With your help, we are hoping to meet this request. If you do not knit or crochet, but would like to donate yarn for this endeavor, please drop it off at St. Denis, with a note "Prayer Shawl Ministry" written on it.

"Whatsoever you do for the least of my brethren, you do unto Me" Matthew 25:40 Thank you and God bless you.
